How will the next generation read and write?
I believe that the next generation will read and write all electronically. Some schools have already started requiring iPads and/or providing iPads to each student or classroom. I think this is an indication of what is to come in the near future. Even now most people communicate through text or e-mail. It has become very popular to use e-books instead of purchasing the regular text book. Eventually I think that will be the only option. Computers are essential to learning in college and I feel that will eventually be true for all grades. Over all I think that technology such as the iPhone or iPad will be how future generations read and write.
I think that you are probably right. It seems like we are beginning to rely on technology more and more every day so I definitely think that this could be a possibility. I hope this switch does not happen in my lifetime though because I personally hate reading off of a screen all the time, I would much rather have a book in front of me to read.
ReplyDeleteI am a physical book lover as well (not in a creepy way). I think that even with technology changes, it would take centuries to get rid of all the books in the world.
DeleteI think you're right about technology becoming a huge part in schools and in college, it already has, but I don't agree that it will be the only resource. I think schools will continue to add technology to their schools, as long as money permits, but I think they will also keep the hard copy books too. Not every student can focus or learn from a computer or electronic book. Some need to be able to write things out or read the physical copy. Also, young kids in preschool or kindergarten may start to learn the basics of technology or computers but they aren't prepared to have their whole class on the computer. They don't have that attention span for it and I'm sure the schools won't want to trust little kids with high technology; therefore, they would keep the physical books around to help teach those kids.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Melissa. Although technology can be a great resource, I think there are too many people who want to keep hard copies around. I love using my computer and iPhone, but when my battery dies or I am done with homework sometimes it is nice to just sit down and read a book. Also for many children the act of writing out what they are learning is key to memorization, therefore if a school cuts out writing I believe test scores and retention will go down. I do think technology can be a good tool when used correctly, but I think a mix of the two will be the best way for children to learn.
DeleteI completely agree with you that everything is becoming all electronic. It seems kids know how to work a ipad or computer before they can even talk. Great ideas!
ReplyDeleteHow do you feel about everything becoming electronic?
